Citric acid is a poison extracted from black mold that is deliberately used to harm humans.
Commercial citric acid is indeed made from mold, but is generally considered safe. There is no evidence that it was used in a conspiracy against the population.
A Facebook post claimed that citric acid, a poison derived from genetically engineered black mold, was hidden in food and used by “evil forces in a direct attempt to lower people’s vitality and natural vibrational frequency.”
Citric acid is one of the most common food additives often used in the food industry to enhance flavor and preserve ingredients such as ketchup, candy and sodas. It is also used in cosmetics and cleaning products. As the name suggests, it is found naturally in citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, and oranges.
However, extracting citric acid directly from fruits is very expensive, and its use in food production is so common that supply outstrips supply. For this reason, it is mainly produced using a specific type of mold called Aspergillus niger, which forms black mold on the surface of fruits such as grapes and apricots.
Citric acid has been approved for use in the UK by the Food Standards Agency. According to the FDA, citric acid is “generally recognized as safe” in food and skin care products.
Drinks and foods containing citric acid can wear away tooth enamel, and some experts studying artificial citric acid are calling for more research into the supplement’s safety.
This post is part of our actual effort to investigate potentially fake images, videos, and stories on Facebook. You can read more about this and learn how to report Facebook content here. For the purposes of this program, we rate this claim as partly false, as industrial citric acid is indeed made from a mold, but there is no evidence that it has been used to poison the public.
Bad information ruins life. It fuels hatred, damages people’s health and damages democracy. You deserve better.
